Platform: Windows (All Versions)

Review by George Norman (Cybersecurity Editor)

on 12 Jun 2014

If you ever got the chance to talk to an architect for example, surely he mentioned a key piece of software: AutoCAD. That is because AutoCAD is the definitive design and drafting tool. An architect can use the tool to come up with stunning 2D and 3D designs. Just in case you forgot what CAD means, I am going to remind you that it is short for computer-aided design.

AutoCAD is available for multiple platforms: Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android. The Windows version has been around for more than three decades; AutoCAD for desktop was rolled out to the public back in 1982. Since 2010, AutoCAD is also available as a mobile web- and cloud-based app marketed as AutoCAD 360.

You can’t install AutoCAD on just any PC. This is an application that needs power – quite a bit of power. You need to have a fairly powerful PC to run AutoCAD on it. Make sure to check the system requirements before attempting to install AutoCAD. If your PC meets the system requirements, you’ll be glad to know that a wizard will help you install AutoCAD on your PC.

You’ll also be glad to know that there’s lots of documentation and help to turn to. Since AutoCAD is a complex, feature-rich tool, you may need some help figuring things out. Luckily for all the people out there who want to get started with AutoCAD, lots of help is available. If you have any questions about AutoCAD, you can even chat with an Autodesk mentor.

Telling you what AutoCAD can do for design and drafting is like telling you what Photoshop can do for photo manipulation. In the world of computer-aided design AutoCAD is just as big as Photoshop is in the photo editing world – a powerful, properly good, and feature rich tool that has lots of useful functionality to offer to architects, engineers, project managers, anyone who is into computer-aided design and drafting.

AutoCAD is free to use for a trial period of 30 days. A prompt will remind you of this fact every time you launch the application. Tip for students and educators: you can sign up for a free 3-year license.

History, popularity, a long list of features, incredibly useful features – AutoCAD has them all! You can’t find a better tool for computer-aided design and drafting.
